Former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, who has been elected as the Chief Minister of Goa, is all set to contest State Legislative Assembly elections within six months’ time. In the meanwhile, Congress is also in full swirl to contest the bypoll elections.
Manohar Parikar is one of the most educated politicians in the country, with a metallurgical engineering degree from Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai. Parikar has always been interested into politics as he had joined Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at a very young age, becoming a mukhya shikshak (chief instructor). He gives the credit of his success to the institution, saying that he has learnt”discipline, progressiveness, gender equality, equality of all before the law, nationalism and social responsibility from the RSS.”
He was noticed during the campaigning of Ram Janmabhoomi movement and was quite active in North Goa unit. Later, he stepped into BJP so as to combat the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party. He elected as the member of Legislative Assembly of the State of Goa in 1994. He became the leader of opposition from June to November 1999. He came into power as the Chief Minister of Goa on October 24, 2000 but his tenure lasted until 27 February, 2007. He was then re-elected as the Chief Minister of the state.
Parikar’s political journey has been through thick and thin – his team’s strength was reduced when four of BJP MLAs resigned from the House. Nevertheless, after a while, his party again won the Goa Assembly Elections held in March 2012 with 24 seats against Congress. After winning a number of elections in his constituency, he made way to the centre and was backed by PM Narendra Modi. The most appropriate profile was given to the minister in 2014, when he was chosen as the Minister of Defence. Moreover, he was shouldered with another responsibility of representing the party for elected Rajya Sabha seat from Uttar Pradesh. He has been in news for his controversial statements, stiff decisions and transparency.
